The Weekly Relationship Check-In That Prevents Big Fights

Twenty minutes a week, three simple questions, and far fewer conversations that start with ‘we need to talk’.

Most big arguments are not really about the thing being argued over. They are about six weeks of small unsaid things arriving at once. A weekly check-in exists to stop that queue from forming.

Keep it to three questions. What went well this week? What felt harder than it should have? What do you need from me in the next seven days? Twenty minutes is enough, and a set time stops it from turning into an ambush.

The rule that makes it work is simple: raise things while they are still small. A mild irritation is a conversation. The same irritation left for two months is a fight.

Do it for a month before you judge it. The first two feel slightly awkward, and by the fourth most couples notice the same thing — there is far less to bring up, because nothing has been left to build.
